Use your EAR to listen and internalize their playing and get it into your mind.

For example, I would hear my favorite sax players "bend" and "swoop" notes on saxophone...
So I would try to copy them by ear - I moved my jaw up and down, I bit down on the reed, I moved around my embouchure... I really felt like I was getting it!
BUT I WAS WRONG!
I realize now, that I had been bending notes incorrectly and it was in fact getting in the way of my progress on saxophone.
It was actually DETRIMENTAL to my saxophone tone and I set myself back years in my progress because I had to UNLEARN these bad techniques.

Many people think they can just learn these embellishments techniques from a saxophone book... myself included!
I tried to learn what a grace note, trill or glissando was and I certainly learned what it looked like when it's written on sheet music.
